Available backup retention plans:
Our backup service provides four different levels of backup coverage for your data protection needs.
Please keep in mind that these requirements are for data backups only. Any need for archiving, long-term retention,
or bare-metal system restores will not be addressed by these policies. Further,
Tivoli Data Protection for Mail and Database clients are not addressed with
these policies. We are still working to finalize our complete
range of services, so if you have specific needs that are not addressed by these policies,
please email us at backups-help@umd.edu and put your two cents in. We welcome
your comments and suggestions and will take them into consideration as we expand services.

When registering for the service, you must specify one default retention plan. Identify either min, low, mid, or hi. You may
configure your client to back up certain files or filesystems under non-default policies by creating an include-exclude list.
Refer to the include-exclude list documentation. We enable this functionality so you can align your retention policies to reduce costs
and improve performance for the client and server.
Billing policies and rates:
As of October 1st, 2007, billing for the OIT Backup Service has been established
at the rate of $0.38 per GB backed up
per month. Charges are retroactive to October 1st, 2007. AFS File Servers will
now also be eligible for chargeback as of January 1st.
An additional charge for licensing will be included for all systems. The
charge for licensing is dependent on system type. The types of systems and
related charges are as follows:
Server
TSM Backup/Archive Client license per processor & maintenance: $11.00 per month
Desktop
TSM Backup/Archive Client license per processor & maintenance: $1.22 per month
Data Protection for Databases and Mail (Oracle, Domino, etc.)
Tivoli Data Protection Client license per processor & maintenance: $20.46 per month
For your convenience, we have developed a TSM Billing Calculator to assist you in budgeting for backup.
Registration:Registration for the backup service is restricted to University of Maryland
departmental and affiliate servers and faculty/staff workstations. Student
workstations and non-University machines will not be eligible for backup
service.
