Backup Services at the University of Maryland

TSM Service Registration

Registration for the TSM service is restricted to University of Maryland departmental servers and faculty/staff workstations. Student workstations and non-University machines do not qualify. To register for the data protection service, please gather the following information for each node that you wish to be registered for service.

To setup an administrative group or to be associated with an existing administrative group:

  • At least one administrative contact with a name, email, and phone number.
Administrative contacts are responsible for specifying the retention policies for the node and handle billing for the node or set of nodes.  They will also receive summary invoice reports via email for charges incurred in the previous billing cycle.

To have individual machines/nodes registered on our TSM server:

  • Host name of the node to be used for node name registration
  • A valid FRS number per node.  This will be used for monthly billing purposes.
  • One technical contact with a name (or group name), email, and phone number.
This contact is responsible for the proper operation and monitoring of the TSM client. They should check error reports, take corrective actions, and may be contacted by us for technical reasons. The technical contact will be emailed for failed or missed backups.  Technical and administrative contacts may be the same individuals.  A technical contact may reference a reflector email address.
  • Client operating systems. The following are supported:
    • Windows
    • Solaris
    • Redhat Linux
    • Mac OSX
    • Novell Netware
    • AIX 5L
Follow the download navigation links for client downloads.
  • Determine which default policy to assign the node. Check the Service Information page to see what the current offerings are.

Finally, for billing and license audit purposes, please provide additional machine information:

  • What type of node will this be:  Workstation, Server, or Data Protection?
    • Workstation is defined as a machine which only has one user and no shared services
    • Server is defined as a machine with more than one user and has shared services
    • Data Protection is a specialized TSM client for backing up databases, i.e. Oracle, MS-SQL, and applications

IMPORTANT: If the node is a workstation, the remaining information is unnecessary.

  • Processor Vendor:        Enter the processor vendor: AMD, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, Intel, Sun, or Other
  • Processor Brand:          Enter the brand of the processor. For example, a POWER 6 processor would be an IBM brand. Likewise, a Xeon is an Intel brand.
  • Cores per Processor:    Enter the number of cores per processor. For example, dual-core processors have two cores per processor.
  • Number of Processors: Enter the number of physical processors in the machine.
Registration for the backup service is restricted to University of Maryland departmental and affiliate servers and faculty/staff workstations. Student workstations and non-University machines will not be eligible for backup service.

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN (9/05/2005).
