Calculator Notes:

  • Calculations assume GB to Backup does not change. Only a percentage of what is to be backed up changes.
  • Data occupancy on TSM reaches a stable average after the number of incremental backups exceeds the number of versions. This calculator uses this fact to estimate an average invoice amount.
  • Networker cost estimates are based on 1 full backup per month, plus 29 nightly incrementals for a 30 day month. This is similar to TSM in that TSM solely does nightly incremental backups. Other backup schemes available with Networker do not provide this nightly backup coverage.
  • Do not use this calculator to estimate costs for AFS backup clients nor Data Protection clients
  • This calculator is meant to be a useful tool to estimate potential costs for your TSM backups. We do not guarantee these results. Depending on your usage of data, your actual invoices may be below or above these results. However, we do know that the majority of clients will see actual invoices BELOW these estimates. Factors such as file deletion, expiration and compression help reduce data occupancy on TSM, but were not considered in this calculator

Input Definitions:

GB to Backup: The approximate amount of data to backup in Gigabytes.

Pct. Daily Change: Estimated percent daily change of the data. IBM gives guidelines that state that busy homespace fileservers usually change on average of about 20%. Less busy clients, such as desktops, see daily change rates between 1-5%.

Number of Versions: This is the number of versions to store while the particular file exists. It is defined on the server-side, however, when applying for backup service, you may choose from 4 different policies (min, low, mid and hi). Each has a different number of versions to retain.

Number of Processors: Our chargeback policies include a monthly fee for software licenses based on number of processors for each node. This is the number of processors that your client has.

License Type: IBM defines license types as servers or desktops. A server is any client that serves files or provides services to more than one remote user. A desktop is a client with a single user and does not provide services to more than one remote user
